CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A.    Background of the problems
            The ability to use the English language is a must in the global era as a means of communication today. Therefore, the mastery of the English language at grade level medium is emphasized, especially students of SMPN 4 Bukittinggi, is expected to good mastery of the English language, students of SMPN 4 Bukittinggi can be individuals who are ready to  actively participate in global competition later . Teaching English subjects in SMPN 4 Bukittinggi still includes 4 the main things, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing . The element of other languages ​​are also taught, among other vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation in accordance with lattice achievement indicators in the means of achieving the learning objectives . Of the four language skills is 4, the learning skills of speaking relating to the pronunciation was less running properly. In fact, students are still weak in terms of pronunciation. In this case the researchers found a lot of mistakes students in pronouncing a vocabulary correctly. For example, when students recite the book ( bok ) , You ( yu ) to ( you ) , usually becomes ( usally ) and many other example. Pronunciation is very strong student influenced by their native language pronunciation, which is Indonesian. Not surprisingly when the influence of the mother tongue ( L1 ) is affecting the foreign language acquisition or second language ( L2 ) .
               Although speaking is difficult to used, on the other hand, speaking is an important skill that should be acquired by students. Nunan said that “people learn language by interacting, then, learners should interact during lessons”.  [1]

               As we know, that the English language is a foreign language very inconsistent in the pronunciation of the vocabulary. Learning in SMPN 4 Bukittinggi should be more emphasis on the aspects of the English language as a tool communication, so the students of SMPN 4 Bukittinggi not only learn the rules of English, but also students should be able to use English as a means of communication. In fact students are still difficult to use English as a tool communication, at least they can use them in learning English, but it is also very hard to do with all sorts of reasons that they catapult.
               Learning like this causes less students can speak English, and they have caused their reluctance students are not trained to vocabularies pronounce correctly. Speaking or pronunciation in English itself is very important. Errors in pronunciation of the vocabulary can cause misunderstandings when we speak in English. For example, like the pronunciation of the first   said I meaningful, not ai nothing the meaning.
               This is a reason why researcher interested in conducting research that is usefull to know how the habit of speaking with speaking comprehension of students in junior high school. Researcher will explain in this thesis with the title “The Correlations Between Pronunciation  and Vocabulary Mastery Toward the Speaking Skill of the seventh Grade Students of SMP4 Negeri in Bukittinggi, Bukittinggi”.
